We have 2 different lines of CROWLEY families in CORK who are supposedly related to each other.
CROWLEY FAMILY NUMBER 1
David Crowley b. 1820 married Honnoria Deasy b. 1820 married (depending on who you want to believe): some say 1830 which would make her 10 years of age - not likely or another stating late 1830's.
Children:
John
David
James
Daniel
Mary
Nora
These are from Timoleague, Bandon CORK and Danganmore.
James and Daniel Crowley emigrated to Australia, the following Relations of theirs
also emigrated:
Daniel aka 'chummie dan'
Daniel aka 'chaffcutter dan'
James aka 'irish jimmy'
Jeremiah who emigrated with james
Jeremiah
Daniel
Timothy
Dennis
James
John
Michael
Margaret - niece of James and Daniel Crowley (Trundle)
CROWLEY FAMILY NUMBER 2
David Crowley married Catherine Mehegan (according to irish church records)
1829 Ballymodan, Cork, Ireland by Rev. Taylor with witnesses Flore Sullivan and Cors Mehegan.
baptism of their children:
Johanna 1832
- 1835
James David 1837
David 1840
Daniel 1843
Cornelius 1847
Dennis 1853
all with parents David and Catherine Mehegan CROWLEY
James David CROWLEY papers said he was born in 1843 Kilbrittain, Ireland, to David and Catherine Mehegan CROWLEY - NO SUCH PERSON EXISTS
The only record to be found is James David CROWLEY being born in 1837 to the
above parents.
The letter: Daniel aka "chummie dan" wrote to James Crowley who was living in Bundalong via Yarrawonga Victoria in 1885. James David Crowley and Catherine Cameron were living there also in Yarrawonga.
Daniel was informing him cousin Jeremiah and Richard had arrived from Ireland.
He asked after James, Mrs and David (i assume that was his son who was 2 years old), Daniel (who was unmarried at the time, but later married in 1885 in Yarrawonga).
JD and Mrs and Family, Mr and Mrs Egan and Mr O'Brien.
NOW THE LEADING QUESTION:
are these two families related.
why can't catherine mehegan crowley be found.
did Catherine and David Crowley emigrate.
why is one family so secretive, the other open like a book.
David and Honnoria Deasy CROWLEY - david's father: David Crowley
David and Catherine Mehegan CROWLEY - david's father: David Crowley
Daniel aka "chummie dan" CROWLEY - his father David Crowley b. 1844
Denis
Timothy
Daniel aka 'chaffcutter dan' - parents: David and Kitty CROWLEY, Ireland
MY GREAT GRANDPA James David Crowley married Catherine Cameron
30 September 1873 in James's House in Wallan Wallan, Victoria by Rev. Muir
Presbyterian Minister.
James deserts his family in 1889. His wife Catherine petitions twice for divorce but both times the Judge refuses. James David Crowley is dead 1 week later after her last attempt on 14 February 1900.
James David Crowley himself admits to maltreating Catherine, womanisting, going to New Zealand, had a woman in Melbourne and one stashed away close by his farm in Yarrawonga, where he lived with Catherine and his children. Catherine stated he disappeared for long periods of time without saying where he was going or where he went, admitted to visiting Chinese Camps, offered Catherine 50 pounds to go away.
NOT AN ANCESTOR YOU WANT TO ADMIRE ON YOUR FAMILY TREE.
I just want to learn more about my Irish Heritage, i don't care anything about him.
I feel very sorry for his children, What an SOB he was.
James David CROWLEY dies 23 February 1900 in Corowa Hospital from aneurism to the Lung, is buried the next day by the Undertaker Charles Clayton and 2 witnesses, i would assume he is in an unmarked grave. The informant was the matron of the hospital, it stated he was 47....how funny ha ha is that, he had no children, never married, no religion.........ARE YOU ALLOWED TO SWEAR ON THIS BLOG, I GUESS NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There really is nothing more to learn. I don't know anything about my Irish Heritage, i guess i don't really have any.
My family tree ends with my GRANDPA James Duncan CROWLEY whose father was James David Crowley, he was brought up by his Cameron Grandparents in Beaconsfield, according to him. He never spoke of his parents.
Someone said Catherine Cameron came to "Victoria Park"once, must have been a long time ago. She died in 1949 in Sydney as Mrs Hillman. She got remarried three more times according to me, but relatives swear black and blue it was only two, who knows and who really cares.
NOT ME.
THE END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OFF TO THE NATIONAL LIBRARY AGAIN CHASING THESE ELUSIVE ANCESTORS
I cannot understand why there are no records of James David CROWLEY being born in 1843 in Kilbrittain Ireland and no trace of who he states his parents were.
QUESTION OF THE DAY?
My family say we are related to the CROWLEYs of Trundle, NSW, Australia.
I cannot find the connection.
I can find all the records for those crowleys and all their close relatives who emigrated to Australia.
These CROWLEYs have most of the traits of my family. Some of the members of the family look similar to my crowley uncles, you could see that probably are related.
MY THEORY HAS BEEN THIS FOR AWHILE but because i have no proof, i don't know whether or not i am off on a wild tangent.
IS THIS BELEIVEABLE: James David Crowley is really one of the Crowley's from Trundle, NSW, and he was brought up by his Grandparents?
Some vital information is missing, how could one possibly find all the records for the so called CROWLEY relatives, but not James David Crowley.
Marriage Certificate says he was 30 when he married which would make him born 1843. He said his father David Crowley was a farmer.
I think this will definitely be my last visit to the National Library, i have tried everywhere.
Whatever the truth is, and for whatever reason, what James David Crowley stated and the truth, are two different stories.
Maybe i will find something tomorrow that i have overlooked in the past.
The search goes ONNNNNNNNNNNNNN and ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN and ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

BACK TO THE CROWLEY FAMILY FOR ANOTHER LOOK
Several things puzzle me about my CROWLEY Ancestry:
* why can't i find any other information other than a marriage certificate and a death certificate. do i have the right certificates???? good question!!!!!
* why all the secrecy within families, why can't we just share information and try and get the true picture of who these people are.
* why can i only find a marriage church RECORD of the supposed parents of James David CROWLEY and church records of baptism dates for their children?
* after that it is like they disappeared off the face of the earth?
* why is it so difficult to find out what happened to James David Crowley and Catherine Cameron's children, where did they go?
* who are David CROWLEY and Catherine MEHEGAN? how do we find out anything else about them, would be nice to get a picture of one's ancestors.
* did David and Catherine Mehegan CROWLEY emigrate somewhere??
Why is it so easy to find out all the information about the CROWLEYs who are supposedly relatives of James David CROWLEY (my ancestor) who emigrated to australia. I have lots of information on the relatives.
Did James David Crowley go to New Zealand for a time!!!!
What sort of a man deserts his family, especially his children and at the end of his life denies they ever existed. It is hard to understand what kind of a person he really was when you cannot find out anything about him. What was Catherine Cameron like as a person?
So many unanswered questions, is it possible that i will ever be able to find anything out.
Why did all the other supposed relatives live in Bandon, Ireland and James David Crowley came from Kilbrittain, Ireland. Do these two places have a similar culture, or are they vastly different.
Most of the supposed relatives who emigrated to Australia did very well for themselves. I saw on my ancestors marriage certificate he was a Miner and on his death certificate he was a Labourer. He emigrated to Australia saying on his papers that he was a Labourer.
Are we really related to the CROWLEY families of Trundle NSW, i find that very hard to imagine, because they seem to be completely different people. Devout in faith, community service orientated, made successful lives for themselves, their children were very well educated, had successful lives, other relatives seem to have been successful too. Hard to imagine that my ancestor is related to these CROWLEYs, i cannot see it, i hate to say this BUT if it is true then he must have been from the poor relation family, just a thought, but i consider a very valid one. Most relatives except for a couple seemed to stay married and be family orientated.
What i have learnt about my ancestor James David CROWLEY so far is that he was a womaniser, probably a drunk, mistreated his wife and family. I just do not know anymore. One of his sons, my grandpa lived with his CAMERON grandparents in Beaconsfield, Victoria, but he never talked about his own parents. Someone told me that his mother came to "Victoria Park" once to visit her son, but i do not know whether that is true.
All i know is, that someone in the family knows more than they are willing to tell.
Who knows what i will be blogging about next.
Would be wonderful if i could say i have made a breakthrough!!!!!!!!!!!!

MOVING ONTO MY NEXT ANCESTOR - THE LAST ONE GOT DEMOTED FROM THE TREE
My other great grandfather was William Williams who lived to the grand old age of 100 years, what an achievement. He was born in Ipswich, Suffolk County, England in 1838 to Edward and Jane Bett WILLIAMS, who i am searching for.
William emigrated to Australia in 1865 on board the ship "Wellesley" and arrived in Melbourne Australia. He worked around Victoria for a few years then moved to Kyeamba Creek, near Wagga Wagga, where he secured some land. He was never afraid of hard work and had a successful life. I don' really know what kind of a man he was, but i think an honest, hard working, good friend to those he knew and trusted. In 1874 he married Miss Louisa Glover, from the district, who was the daughter of ex-convict John Glover from Kent England, who became a very well respected person in the district.
John was transported, got 7 years for stealing fowls, from Maidstone Gaol, Kent, England. From what i have read he seemed to have learnt the error of his way and ended up not getting into trouble again, here in Australia.
He arrived aboard the ship "Henry Tanner" and was assigned to Mr Leahy near Camden, NSW. He met and married Mary Lennon, who was an "irish famine refugee" from Galway, Ireland. Mary's parents were Michael Lennon and Bridget Conroy, from Galway, Ireland.
William and MaryAnn Glover set up home on their farm and raised their 10 children. One of those was my grandpa Ernest Alfred Williams, a quiet man, emotionally very distant, probably only said hello and goodbye to you. I recall when we used to visit him every year for Christmas for a few days, at 7pm on the dot, he would watch the news on Television, you were allowed to sit in the room with him, but not allowed to speak one word...and i mean not one.
My great grandpa William apparently was very well liked in the district and nothing was ever to much trouble for him. My impression is that he was a kind man, worked hard his whole life, devoted to his wife and family.
One of his sons Frederick and wife Louisa Kendall, were married for over 75 years. Fred died six weeks short of his 100th birthday. It seems kind of unbelieveable that people could be married for that long, they must have been devoted to each other. They also had 10 children. I read that Fred was good with his hands and made wooden furniture. They spent their last years at Greenlodge in Temora NSW. What an inspirational couple they must have been to their family.
William Williams passed away 1938, his 100th year.
I have been trying to trace his parents Edward and Jane Bett, but no luck so far.
The difficulty seems to set in when you try to find the Great Great Grandparents, it aint so easy then.
I found a great website: Carol Baxter, who is a writer and genealogist. I used some of her suggestions and it made everything a lot more easier to find and a lot less frustrating, after awhile you begin to think that your ancestors were frauds or something.
When William Williams turned 100 years, over 200 friends and relatives turned out for his party, what a turn out, what a guy he must have been. I like this man, i can have great admiration for him. He seems too perfect, but i am sure he had some flaws but he certainly did not desert his family.

JAMES DAVID CROWLEY and CATHERINE CAMERON
This is my new focus in my family research. James David Crowley states on his papers that his parents are David Crowley and Catherine Mehegan. I have exhausted every avenue in trying to find a link to them even to the point of putting an advertisment in an Irish Newspaper to which i had a couple of replies but nothing worked out.
I don't know what is the big secret about trying to find out about the CROWLEY family.
I know James Crowley emigrated to australia in 1868
Married Catherine Cameron in 1873
Read the newspaper reports of Divorce proceedings
I know where James is buried and when he died
The dates to when he was born are conflicting - some say 1843 others say 1837.
There are Irish Church Records for James David Crowley being baptised in November 1837 to David Crowley and Catherine Mehegan.
On his death certificate he stated he had never been married nor had any children.
He stated that his parents were David Crowley and Catherine Mehegan.
Some of my Crowley relatives have been to Ireland and could find nothing.
I am just interested in knowing what kind of a person my great grandfather James Crowley was. My grandpa James Duncan told me that he grew up with his
CAMERON Grandparents in Beaconsfield, Victoria.
I don't really know where to start looking anymore.
Maybe Yarrawonga where he and Catherine lived. I doubt Corowa NSW would have anything on him - that is where he died.
Have to rethink where i look next.

END OF THE ROAD
Well i have searched exhaustively for many years...BUT STILL NOTHING....this is all i am left with:
James David CROWLEY born in 1837, Kilbrittain, Ireland, to parents David and Catherine Mehegan CROWLEY. His papers state he was born in 1843. Which is truth and which is NOT.
The only James David CROWLEY i could find born to Catherine and David Mehegan CROWLEY was a church record saying he was baptised in November 1837.
There is a Daniel CROWLEY in the same family baptised in May 1843 and David CROWLEY baptised 11 November 1840.
Somewhere along the line the records are wrong.
Well i did try. I can find a record of Catherine Mehegan and David CROWLEY who were married in 1829, in Ireland, but when i try to connect the children up to these parents they come up with other parents.
I will never know who James David CROWLEY really was or if that is even his real name. A search of him with birthdate 1843 just put him with other parents.
Enough is Enough!!!!!!
I started this journey hoping to find something out about my family heritage, it was all a waste of time and i am left exactly with what i started with.

Remember that song...The Beat Goes On......Well, this is "The Search Goes On"
I wish i knew what i was doing wrong, i had a good idea, i put an advertisement in an Irish Newspaper, one person replied to me, gave me some good tips and even did a little searching for me, i was very grateful. The dates seem to match OK, but when i go to put them together......ZILCH............one good thing did happen though, i finally found 1 record of David Crowley being the spouse of Catherine Mehegan. BUT...when i go to look for records on their children, there are always with different parents, cannot find one person whose parents are David Crowley and Catherine Mehegan, SO, no further ahead. They tell me to keep searching for the sponors of the baptism of children, that will lead me somewhere...BUT, a dead end again.
The problem i keep having is that no-one has parents DAVID CROWLEY and CATHERINE MEHEGAN.
I don't know what to do next!!!!!!
Someone gave me a record....Baptism of Catherine Mehegan in 1809 with parents Thad Mehegan and Joanna Quinlan but do you think i can find them, holy hell NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
What am i missing.
Well i cannot see what is wrong or where to go next.
Why can't i find records for the following:
James David CROWLEY and Catherine CAMERON
Found David Crowley christened in 1876 at Saint Malachy's Church Nagambie, Victoria but nothing for his siblings.

A TIRED AND WORN DOWN FAMILY RESEARCHER.....
The search goes on, now i have decided to change tactics and look for my Victoria CROWLEY ancestors.
James David CROWLEY b. 1843 Kilbrittain, Ireland
emigrates to Melbourne Australia in January 1868 on
ship "southern cross".
Gets married in 1873 to Catherine Cameron
daughter of Duncan and Flora Buchanan CAMERON
Has children
David
Dennis
James Duncan
Flora
Catherine
Cornelius
Johanna
I found a baptism entry for David Crowley b. 1876
Saint Malachy's Church, Nagambie, Victoria
James Duncan is my Grandpa
Cornelius i know about
Dennis i know about
The others i cannot find anything out about.
James David CROWLEY d. 1900 in Corowa, NSW, Hospital
I have heard stories about Catherine Cameron, but i don't know what is true
and what is not.
Irish records do not show James David Crowley being born in 1843 only in 1837 with parents David and Catherine Mehegan CROWLEY.
BUT i found a record of David Crowley and Catherine Mehegan married in 1843.
I found a prison register entry for James CROWLEY in 1861 for assaulting Daniel CROWLEY.
I have a picture of Catherine Cameron with 2 other ladies but i do not know who they are. Perhaps to me it looks like Mother and 2 daughters.

Which Scenario to Use................
Well i have a few scenarios to my genealogy search and i am not sure which one to go with:
a. My ancestor James David Crowley states he is born in 1843 Kilbrittain, Ireland and his parents are David and Catherine Mehegan Crowley but the only Church record i can find in Ireland states he was born in 1837 and Daniel Crowley was born in 1843.
Therefore, begs the question is he James David or Daniel?
All his record dates match up that he was born in 1843.
b. I guess i will never know who my ancestor really is or anything about his family.
c. He came to Australia stating he was a Labourer and on his death certificate it stated he was a Labourer.
d. Either nobody knows anything about him or doesn't want to tell me anything about him.
e. I have seen a record where David and Catherine Mehegan Crowley were married in Kilbrittain in 1843, did they get married the same year James David was born?
f. Strange that his death certificate said he had No Religion when all the Crowley's in my family (except for me and my siblings - our Mother was Church of England) are Devout Catholics.
Final Scenario - i will never know what kind of family he came from, or anything about him, no photos have ever been sited, it just seems to me that he was a drifter with no purpose in life or running away from someone or something. On his death certificate he stated he had no family, only a mother and father. When he walked out and deserted his wife and 7 children, he must have never given his children another thought. He was buried by the undertaker at the gravesite with two witnesses. A very sad ending to one's life.
He is the second ancestor of mine who is buried in an unmarked grave.
This is the end of the ancestry trail.
a. My ancestor James David Crowley states he is born in 1843 Kilbrittain, Ireland and his parents are David and Catherine Mehegan Crowley but the only Church record i can find in Ireland states he was born in 1837 and Daniel Crowley was born in 1843.

Still On The Ancestor Trail
Well here i go again......i actually found a new record, which i hope will lead me in the right direction. Somebody suggested to me that i try spelling the surname a different way, this is what i achieved:
David Crowley married Catherine Meghan in about 1843 (lists Catherine as being born
about 1822)
My irish/australian ancestor was James David Crowley whose certificates state
he was born in 1843 Kilbrittain, Ireland, with parents
David Crowley and Catherine Meghan.
This David and Catherine were married in Kilbrittain, Ireland.
Maybe James David Crowley was born the same year as his parents got married.
But i still have some hurdles to get over.
One of James David Crowley's grandson's went to Kilbrittain, Ireland and brought
back the following records:
David Crowley marries Catherine Mehegan in 1829, Kilbrittain, Ireland
with baptism dates of the following children:
Johanna 1832
Timothy 1835
James David 1837
David 1840
Daniel 1843
Cornelius 1847
Dennis 1853
I engaged the services of an Irish Genealogist who sent me the following church
record: David Crowley and Catherine Mehegan married in RC Church, Minister
Rev. Taylor at Ballymodan Kilbrogan Desertserges near Bandon, Cork.
Then i myself found the following:
Baptism Records:
Johanna 1832
no 1st name 1835
James David 1837
David 1840
Daniel 1843
Cornelius 1847
Dennis 1853
Which ones are right and which ones do i discard.
The saga continues.

STARTING ALL OVER
Well i am back, i have decided to scrap all my ancestry notes and start a fresh, i haven't really destroyed them, just put them away out of site.
I decided to change the spelling of the surname of my Ancestor's Mother on advice from other family history researchers, i did that and it paints a completely different picture, but still need to confirm it.
If my new information is correct then my ancestor was born the same year as his parents marriage, we shall see. This spelling i had before, but couldn't find anything so i changed to a different spelling. Everywhere you look the spelling is different, no wonder people get so confused and it takes so many years to find any information.
So off to the National Library i go again tomorrow to see if i can confirm my new information. Then again, it might turn out to be a false lead again. I found someone in Ireland who is related to other people with the same surname and sent him some information, he was very appreciative, as it was his family. In one of the photos he said was his Mother. I was very glad that i could help someone else. He said he would look to see if he could find anything on my ancestor, for which i am truly grateful.
I have no idea how long this search will go on for, i seem to be able to find all the information on other families of the same surname, just not mine.
The person in Ireland doesn't think my family is connected to his. Sometimes i feel as if all the research i have done has been for nothing.
Onwards with the search, i have a renewed vigour, let's see how long it lasts.

STILL SEARCHING WITH NO LUCK.....
Well here i am again, it's Sunday evening, i thought i made a breakthrough but NO WAY. I saw the name of an ancestor on a family tree but when i tried to research her, nothing. Dead end once again. I have come to accept either the records are wrong or my ancestor gave himself a new identity when he emigrated to Australia. What shall i do next, should i just end off my research or keep trying, everybody tells me i have the wrong information but i am only going on what my ancestor put on his papers, so they can stop blaming ME.
I guess i will go on to the next family ancestor, what bad luck, those are in Ireland too, don't like
my chances.
I got stuck on my english ancestors and can go no further.
I guess i am stuck all the way around now.
WHY DID I START MY RESEARCH
Well, that is because i wanted to try and find some ancestor who perhaps had the same traits as i do. In my own family i don't feel like a belong, i don't connect up with anbody and some relatives are very mean to me, demanding to know why i don't care about my family. Well it is not true that i do not care, but, when a parent finds it easy to love 4 children and not the other, something has to be wrong. My own daughters have commented to me on numerous occasions that my mum only liked my siblings, even my husband said he saw how i was treated differently. My parents did everything for my sons but nothing for my daughters. I went to her funeral and her sister had the gaul to go up me when she did not speak to her sister (my mum) for over 40 years, she must have been feeling guilty, i guess. No need to take it out on me.
Maybe i need a new project because clearly this one did not end well.
I feel a great sense of disappointment, like i still do not belong anywhere.
Has anybody ever heard of Dr Marie Crowley, the archivist and historian who wrote a book
called Brothers and Sisters and Box Trees, about the Crowly Family of Trundle, NSW. I read her book, it was very interesting, My family say we are related to that family, but i cannot see how.
They are the kind of family you would love to be connected to.
My next post will be on an entirely different subject.

ANCESTRY HELP
anybody out there who can help me with finding info on my elusive
ancestors.
James David CROWLEY b. 1837, Kilrittain, Cork, Ireland
he emigrated to Australia in 1868 on "southern cross".
Married Catherine CAMERON in 1873 in Victoria.
He died 1900 Corowa, NSW, buried by an undertaker and 2
witnesses and i believe buried in an unmarked grave.
Death Certificate states he was 47, which is untrue.
His parents listed as David Crowley and Catherine
Mehegan.
QUESTION: Where did the information on his death
certificate come from, who provided that?
What happened to his children, i guess they didn't see him
again after he deserted them in approximately 1888 or 1889.
James Duncan CROWLEY married to Ellen LAWLOR (my
grandparents), he grew up with Duncan and Flora Buchanan
CAMERON.
James Duncan CROWLEY was a devoted husband and family
man, who was kind, fair, loved his 46 grandchildren dearly,
a good story teller, great sense of humour. He died on my
19th Birthday.
OTHER ANCESTOR:
Thomas LAWLOR and Catherine MURPHY, haven't been able
to find much out about them either.
I have heard not nice stories about my granny Ellen Lawlor CROWLEY,
but to me she was always lovely, i remember her with great fondness even
if i am unhappy about the way my mother was treated by her. My
mother was shunned because she was not a Catholic, granny wouldn't
go to their wedding and never came to our house, even though it was
just a couple of miles away. My late dad used to always say to me
"granny always loved you but hated your religion", she had special
rosary beads for me and everytime i went therei had to say Hail Mary with her. Cousins tell me that granny used to say nasty things about her grandchildren to other grandchildren, i never experienced that so i cannot say.
I remember going to her house a lot when i was growing up.
Sometimes she used to let me brush her longsilver hair.
I remember she always sat at the same place at the kitchen
table, wore dark clothing and always wore black lace-up boots.
I have a picture of Catherine CAMERON, have heard unsavoury
stories about her too, but i never knew her, so i cannot say anything.
I surmise that Duncan and Flora CAMERON were lovely decent
people by the way my grandpa JD Crowley turned out and how he
treated people, a beautiful soul of a man.

OTHER ANCESTORS
Moving on to other ancestors now, more road blocks and secrecy.
Here goes....i found out through researching that one of my ancestors
passed away in Kenmore Asylum, where he was admitted five months
before his demise. I had never heard of this person before, i knew
lots about his siblings but not him. I found his unmarked grave and
went there to pay my respects. The family story goes that he was
kicked in the head by a horse and was never the same again.
I find this story highly suspicious, because why would that need
boundless efforts to keep it from people. I have my own thoughs but
of course have no proof. I tried to get access to his records as i wanted
to build up a story about my ancestor, not to say anything negative
about him. They refused as he still has living relatives whom i
know would never give permission to me. I just wanted to know
why he was in Kenmore in the first place. They had an inquest into
his death which in itself sounds fishy. The said they took him to
the hospital ward but as there was no-one there they couldn't do
anything for him. I surmised that surely you would call for an
ambulance and take him to hospital. That doesn't make any sense
to me. I saw online where they said he died in a Government Asylum
and that he had no belongings, even the entries above his name had
records saying ....the record against another person saying, "he had $5 or one
pair of trousers". I found that i felt a real connection to this ancestor
because i know what it is like to feel like an outsider in one's own
family and to be shunned because you dare to be different, he was
32 years old. I wanted to write an ancestry story dedicated to those
who came before me, not anything negative. Now i will never
know as the records are closed for 113 years and there are still many years to go.
I wanted to erect a small white cross with his name on it, i contacted the
council, they said it was OK, then i get a letter from the council stating
that it will cost me $145 to do this. I guess the only thing i can do now
is visit the site and leave him some flowers every now and then.
Now for another ancestor, i remember seeing him in the village when
i was a teenager, he was a bit different but through research i found
out that he had been gassed in World War 1, been in a mental hospital
in London, then discharged from the Army. I remember him telling
the family he was related to them and they said NO WAY, funny thing
is that it turns out that he was their Mother's brother, their uncle.
Why do people get so scared of us who are a little different, have our
own opinions and just want to be accepted for who we are.
Searching for another ancestor who states his parents names on his
certificates and official papers, once again the names do not
match up together.
I am beginning to think i am jinxed and have no idea who i really
am or who my family is.
THE SECRETS KEEP COMING.....
My late aunt told me once that a family member of my Mother's
family had spent her life in and out of Kenmore for depression, i
asked my late Mum, she said "that is an absolute lie". I only
wanted to know details because i myself have been a life
long sufferer of Depression, just wanted to know if it ran
in the family.
I now have to go grocery shopping, which i absolutely loathe...
Story continues later and you guessed it MORE FAMILY
SECRETS.
I love that show "Who Do You Think You Are" but in my family
research there are no happy endings, or stories i can write about
or even memoralise. They say you can choose your friends but
not your family.
HOW ABOUT WHEN YOU CANNOT EVEN FIND OUT
WHO YOUR TRUE FAMILY ARE.
I guess i feel a little better having the opportunity to blog about
my disappointment. My american friend told me i would be
disappointed when i told him i was researching my family
history, he was right, I ABSOLUTELY WAS.
Tody i am not sure which ancestor i will look for next but
who knows, maybe there will be disappointment all the way
round.

Well today is a new day.....went out and about today, still no luck.
Someone said to me that your information is wrong somewhere, WELL, the information came from my ancestor himself via his certificates.
So there is nowhere to go.
Everything is apparently a secret.....i do not understand how the death certificate can have information about him that cannot be found by anyone else.
So i guess someone knew him and said who he was and gave them the information.

BUILDING A PROFILE
My Great Grandfather James David CROWLEY emigrates to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in January 1868.
In 1873 he marries Catherine CAMERON, daughter of Duncan and Flora Buchanan CAMERON.
The have children:
David
James Duncan
Flora
Catherine
Dennis is Killed in First World War
Cornelius
Johanna
In 1888 or 1898 James David CROWLEY disappears.
For 20 years family history researchers have tried to find him.
Finally he is found buried in an unmarked grave in Corowa NSW, with no family, religion or minister, buried by Undertaker Charles Clayton and witnesses James Riley and John Jas Squires.
Still stating that his parents were David Crowley (Farmer) and Catherine Mehegan.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
So many David CROWLEY's from Cork, Ireland, it is impossible to decide which one he is, as there is still no mention of Catherine Mehegan.
How are these 4 People Related: David and Honnoria Deasy Crowley from Bandon, Cork, Ireland AND David and Catherine Mehegan Crowley from Kilbrittain, Cork, Ireland.
FAMILY MEMBERS SAY YES they are related.
MY THEORY SO FAR IS THIS:
James David CROWLEY was either running from something or someone?????????
Is his name really James David Crowley?
Is he really a family member of David and Honnoria Deasy Crowley?
What is clear is that no-one can for sure say who James David CROWLEY was?????
We know his wife Catherine CAMERON filed for divorce??? was it ever granted??
The court case was in 14 February 1900, James was dead on 23 February 1900.
Stay tuned for the next episode of this saga to find out if i ever get my answers, if you are interested!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Family History continues
Well today is a new day, off to the National Library of Australia i go, still searching for my elusive ancestors.
David and Catherine Mehegan CROWLEY where did you go?
A perplexing question about my ancestor James David CROWLEY 1. why would he lie about his age and date of birth on all his official papers, e.g. emigration, marriage and death certificates. 2. Was he running from something or away from someone???
Hmmmmmmmmmm....sounds very suspicious to me.
So i still have no idea about my irish heritage, is James David Crowley even his real name, i am beginning to think he is a total FRAUD. Why is he listed on church records with a birthdate of 1837 with parents David Crowley and Catherine Mehegan.
I know i am missing something vital here but i cannot put my finger on it.
Did people emigrating to Australia have to have any identification papers?
When he married in 1873 in Victoria, Australia, did he have to produce any documentation to prove who he was?
JUST QUESTIONS MORE QUESTIONS and MORE QUESTIONS.
I really feel like giving up, but now i am driven to find out who this person
really is.
His whole life has been a secret, nobody in his family or relatives knew what happened
to him after he deserted his family in 1889 - a wife and 7 children.
On his death certificate he said he had no family just Mother: Catherine Mehegan and Father: David Crowley.
It was only recently (quite by accident) that one of my relatives found out he was buried in Corowa NSW. For years his grandchildren used to relay all sorts of different stories about where he went, but in the end, he only moved a little way away from where he was, when he was married.
Most of the Crowley's who emigrated from County Cork, Ireland seemed to have lead successful and productive lives, James David's occupation when he came to australia was a Labourer and when he died his occupation was still Labourer. All in All a very sad life i should think.
Well i am off for now!!! Going to a little seminar on Looking Up Passenger Lists tomorrow, hopefully i can ask some questions that might help me.

still searching
Hi my name is Suz, i am currently searching for my Irish Ancestors with not much luck. So far i have found a marriage date record and the baptism dates of the children of my Ancestors: David Crowley and Catherine Mehegan, but now i have come to a dead end.
My family tell me that we are related to other County Cork Crowley's who emigrated to Australia but i am yet to see the connection.
Could two brothers from the same family have the first name of DAVID?
I really don't know anymore.
The other Crowley's are James and Daniel who married the EGAN sisters from Victoria, Johanna and Catherine and later moved to Trundle NSW.
My great grandfather James David CROWLEY (son of David and Catherine) emigrated to Australia aboard "southern cross" to Melbourne in 1868.
In 1873 he married Catherine CAMERON (daughter of Duncan Cameron and Flora Buchanan). They had 7 children, then James disappeared.
I finally found his death certificate which stated the following:
Died 23 February 1900 in Corowa NSW Hospital
Occupation: Labourer
Age: 47 which is definitely a lie!!!!!
Father: David Crowley (farmer)
Mother: Catherine Mehegan
Place of Marriage: unmarried (he was divorced from Catherine)
Cause of Death: Haemoptysis, Aneurism of Lung
Length of Illness: Years
Buried: New Cemetery Corowa NSW
No Minister or Religion
Undertaker: Charles Clayton with witnesses: James Riley and John Jas Squires
Registered: 26 February 1900
On James David CROWLEY's emigration records he says he is 26, when really he was
31. He was born in Kilbrittain in 1837 according to the Church records.
I presume he is in an unmarked grave. This is my second Ancestor i have found
in an unmarked grave, it saddens me very much, nobody deserves not to have
some commemoration, even if it is just a name on a cross on the grave.
After awhile you get so sick of searching and wonder whether it was really worth looking in the first place.
I only found the marriage date and baptism dates for Catherine and David Crowley and their children through an Irish Genealogist and he said there are no more records so i guess this is the end of the trail, i certainly hope not, but for now it will have to do.
My Grandpa James Duncan CROWLEY (son of James and Catherine) was brought up by his Grandparents (Duncan and Flora Buchanan CAMERON).
I don't really know where to go now with this search!!!!!!!!!!!
My family tell me that we are related to other County Cork Crowley's who emigrated to Australia but i am yet to see the connection.
Could two brothers from the same family have the first name of DAVID?
I really don't know anymore.
